From Global Trade To Masochism

Your grocery bill keeps climbing. Coffee, tea, chocolate — even basics on the shelf — cost more every month.

Small businesses face the same squeeze: raise prices and lose customers, or absorb the cost and watch profits vanish.

We blame inflation or supply chains, but another quiet culprit drives prices higher: tariffs.

Sold as “protection,” they’ve always punished families and crushed opportunity.

  • 18th Century

Ordinary tea sparked extraordinary rebellion: the Boston Tea Party against taxation without representation.

  • ⚔️ 19th Century

Tariffs turned breakfast into a battlefield. Coffee was cut with chicory, and tea duties nearly split the Union.

  • 🌎 20th Century

Protectionist tariffs choked global trade. Coffee rotted in Brazil, tea sat unsold in Asia, and the Great Depression deepened.

  • 🚩 21st Century

The Tea Party shouted about tyranny in 2009 — then cheered tariffs by 2016. Liberty traded for lunacy, with caffeinated goods caught in modern tariff wars.

Tariffs Harm Economies

Tariffs raise the cost of everyday life — not to protect you, but to protect special interests. They don’t help small businesses or working families. They make everyone pay more for less: coffee, tea, chocolate, even basics on the grocery shelf. Each tariff is a hidden tax, dressed up as patriotism but paid for by you.

And here’s the kicker: nearly every economist — left, right, and center — has reached the same conclusion. Tariffs destroy wealth and shrink opportunity. It’s the one point on which history’s fiercest rivals actually agreed. They clashed on everything else, but on tariffs, they spoke with one voice.

  • Henry George

🔥 A Left Progressive Reformer, George called tariffs a scam tax on workers — a cheap trick to distract from fixing real inequality.

  • Frank Taussig

📊 A Left Progressive Economist, Taussig showed how tariffs always raised costs and shielded inefficiency at the expense of growth.

  • Frédéric Bastiat

⚔️ A Right Capitalist & Satirist, Bastiat mocked tariffs as “legal plunder” — theft dressed in patriotism, robbing the many for the few.

  • William Graham Sumner

🏴‍☠️ A Right Capitalist Defender of Markets, Sumner argued tariffs warped competition and rewarded political privilege over honest work.

It's Over 90% of Economists Now

2018 – IGM Economic Experts Panel

In March 2018, the IGM Forum panel of about 40 top academic economists was unanimous (100% agreement) that President Trump’s new steel and aluminum tariffs would not improve Americans’ welfare.

None of the experts polled expected a net benefit from these tariffs – indicating a consensus that the tariffs would harm the U.S. economy (76% “strongly disagreed” and 24% “disagreed” that the tariffs would help)

2018 – Reuters Economists Poll (U.S.–China Trade War)

A Reuters survey in September 2018 found 100% of economists (all 70 forecasters polled) agreed that escalating tariffs in the U.S.–China trade war were “bad” for the U.S. economy and growth outlookreuters.comreuters.com. In other words, every economist surveyed said the trade-war tariffs would do more harm than good to the United States.

2021 – American Economic Association (AEA) Member Survey

In a 2021 survey of AEA economists, 95% of respondents agreed that “tariffs and import quotas usually reduce general economic welfare,” reflecting an almost universal view that tariffs are harmful overallpolitifact.com. This result is consistent with three prior decades of AEA polls (1990, 2000, 2011), each of which likewise found about 94–95% of economists in agreement on the negative economic impact of tariffspolitifact.com. (The 2021 AEA survey received responses from roughly 1,700 U.S. economists, mostly in academia but also in business and government.)

2018 – NABE Business Economists Policy Survey

A mid-2018 survey by the National Association for Business Economics reported that over 90% of U.S. business economists expected the Trump administration’s tariffs (including proposed tariffs) to have “unfavorable” impacts on the U.S. economycbsnews.com. This NABE panel consisted of 251 economists in industry and government, surveyed in July–August 2018cbsnews.com. In short, well over nine in ten business economists believed the tariffs would hurt economic growth in the United States

From Broken Windows, Promises, & Dreams to True Rebellion

Tariffs don’t protect — they punish. They raise prices, shrink choices, and strangle opportunity. True patriots, from the Boston Tea Party onward, fight for freedom in trade — not barriers.

That’s why Phantom Vibes delivers fresh coffee and tea roasted after you order, sourced from small businesses at home and abroad — not corporations. Every shipment comes with access to our eBooks on trade and prosperity, so you can learn the truth while you sip.

We also once tried launching our own gaming headsets, but tariff hikes crushed that dream. It hit us hard — and yeah, we’re still a little bitter about it.

So now, we’re selling our bitterness in caffeine and education — using coffee and economics to wake people up to how trade policy affects everyone.
